SIBU: All the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) component parties’ members have been told to ensure GPS candidates can wrest Lanang and Sibu from the opposition in the 15th general election (GE15).
Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) President Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said the two parliamentary seats, which have been held by the opposition for 10 years, did not experience much development progress.
By winning Sibu and Lanang, he said, GPS can fight for more funds from the federal government and bring in more development projects.
“So, GPS must win the two seats, ‘jangan tengok saja…’ (do nothing) on Nov 19. Come forward and vote for our candidates,” he said during the GPS mobilisation night for Lanang and Sibu seats here last night.
More than 2,000 GPS members, including SUPP, Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) present at the event.
The deputy premier said the DAP, which is part of the Pakatan Harapan coalition, failed to fulfil their promise to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) – when they were in power – as the federal government for 22 months.
“DAP has misled the people for 10 years (in Lanang and Sibu) … What have they given to Sarawak and its people? Nothing as they were bankrupt of ideas,” he stressed.
“Thus, GPS must win all 31 parliamentary seats in GE15,” he added.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Michael Tiang Ming Tee said the DAP Lanang incumbent Alice Lau only managed to bring in RM2 million for her constituency.
“Do you want nothing for the next five years under the opposition?” he asked.
Tiang, who is Pelawan assemblyman, said the opposition failed to resolve and improve the condition of the Sibu airport road with uneven and bumpy surfaces that endanger motorists.
“Give us five years to represent Lanang and Sibu. Let us show you how to make Sibu better,” he said.
Dr Sim also introduced GPS candidates; Dudong SUPP chief Wong Ching Yong (Lanang) and Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting (Sibu) who both are new faces – to contest in the GE15.
