MUKAH: A daughter of a longhouse chief was crowned ‘Kumang Gawai Dayak 2018’ on Sunday night (13 May).
Of mixed SinoKadazan and Iban parentage, Grace Mithchellynna Jineus, 20, outshined nine other contestants during the ‘Mukah Division Pre-Gawai Dayak Dinner’ held at Dewan Suarah Mesra, here.
With the win, who works as marketing assistant and hails from Rh. Payong ,Sungai Sebuloh Balingian, walked away with RM700 cash, trophy, crown, sash and hamper.
The first-runner up of this Makai Malam Mantar Gawai Dayak, was Gwendoline Tyner Nyangun, who took home RM500, trophy and hamper.
In third spot was Suzzy ELvynia Nyanau, who won RM300, trophy and hamper.
The consolation prize winners were Eleanor Calista Angie, Fresca Ferra Ricky, Bermas Julin, Emelsha Jeburie Abol, Asnesa Asing, Bovina Badong and Paulina.
In the traditional Betaboh event, the Temesu Crew Team, took the first spot to win RM350, second place( Bulu Landak Group-RM250) and third(Jarum Besi Guni Baja-RM150) .
Prizes to the winners were presented by Cr. Jay Keram, who represented Tellian State Assemblyman Yussibnosh Balo, and a constituency special officer, Che Ghazali Arbi, who represented Balingian State Assemblyman Abdul Yakub Arbi
At the event which was attended by about 500 peoples from all walks of life Ghazali also presented the grant of RM3,000 to the organiser from the peoples’ representative(Yakub).
Also seen at the function were Sarawak Dayak National Union Mukah Branch(SDNU Mukah) Chairman cum organising chairman, Francis Atan, Mukah District Police Chief, DSP Jimmy Ak Panyau, Penghulu Uking, Penghulu Iju Tutong, Penhgulu Empaling Beji, and the representatives Resident Office and Dalat/Mukah District Council.
