Graff has revealed the largest square emerald-cut diamond in the world, dubbed the ‘Graff Lesedi La Rona’. According to the London-based luxury jewellery house, the 302.37-carat gem — which is a top D colour — is the largest highest-colour, highest-clarity diamond ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America.
The diamond is one of 66 to have been cut and polished from a 1,109-carat rough diamond named Lesedi La Rona, which was mined in Botswana and is the largest gem-quality rough diamond to have been discovered in more than a century.
“My love affair with diamonds is life-long and crafting the Graff Lesedi La Rona has been an honor,” said the brand’s founder Laurence Graff in a statement.
“This diamond is beyond words. We had an immense duty to cut the very, very best diamond imaginable from this rough. All our expertise, skill and accomplishment went into crafting this incredible diamond masterpiece, which is extraordinary in every way.”
A custom-built scanner was constructed in order to analyze the stone, with Graff’s gemologists mapping the diamond’s imperfections with new imaging software to determine the best way to cut it in order to yield the largest and highest clarity diamonds possible — a process that took 18 months. – Relaxnews
