MIRI: A 50-year-old grass cutter was killed on the spot when he was knocked down by a 4WD vehicle at KM43 Miri-Bintulu Road yesterday morning. In the 6.15am incident, the deceased identified as Meli Manggang died on the spot due to injuries he sustained following the incident.
State Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department Chief, Supt Alexson Naga Chabu in a statement yesterday said the 4WD vehicle driven by a 60-year-old man was on the way to Miri from Bintulu before the incident happened.
“Upon approaching the crash area the driver of the 4WD vehicle was surprised to see a van parked on the lane he was using which caused the driver to suddenly slam the brakes before the 4WD vehicle skidded and rammed into Meli who was at that time cutting grass by the roadside,” he said. The impact of the crash caused the 4WD vehicle to turn turtle bythe roadside.
Meli’s remains were taken to Miri Hospital’s morgue for a post mortem. The New Sarawak Tribune was made to understand that Meli was a longhouse chief of Sungai Setulai Lambir Kampung Tunku Abdul Rahman. Police are investigating.
