MIRI: The Great British Circus is expected to greatly boost the local tourism sector, attracting tourists from outside the city, particularly from Brunei.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts I (Tourism), Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, expressed optimism about the show’s impact.
“I’m confident that all of you will enjoy their two-hour performance. It has been many years since Miri last hosted a circus performance, so seize this opportunity to come and enjoy the show,” Ting said.
The circus, featuring performers from over 10 countries, will take place from July 26 to August 25 this year at the Boulevard Shopping Mall car park.
Before arriving in Miri, the circus troupe performed in Kuching, West Malaysia, Thailand, and other international locations.
Earlier, Miri City Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang emphasized the significance of such events in enhancing Miri’s reputation as a tourist destination.
“The arrival of the circus troupe is crucial for our city and community,” he said.
The event aligns with several major developments in Miri aimed at boosting economic growth and tourism, including the Kenyalang Smart City project and the relocation of Shell’s headquarters to Miri.
The Miri City Council is diligently working towards transforming Miri into a greener, smarter, and more livable international resort city by 2030, with a focus on digital technology, infrastructure improvement, and enhanced public amenities.
Earlier this year, Miri celebrated its 19th anniversary as a city with the vibrant Miri MayFest, which featured a variety of cultural and community events. This festival is part of a broader strategy to enhance Miri’s appeal as a tourist destination.
“These events are important as they help establish a balanced lifestyle for Mirians outside of work. Time spent on personal hobbies, nurturing our youth, and family bonding contribute to a happier and healthier society.
These initiatives collectively mark a year of progressive changes and enhancements for Miri, positioning it as a forward-looking city with a strong focus on sustainability, education, and community well-being,” Yii added.
The Great British Circus, an international production by Big Kid Entertainment from the UK, is renowned for its extraordinary performances and talented artists who have captivated audiences worldwide.
Hosting this world-renowned circus is a special occasion for the Miri community, offering an opportunity to come together and celebrate the magic and thrill of the circus arts.
