SIBU: Bunds and pumping stations here built by the government have greatly reduced flooding in some low-lying areas during the period of heavy rain.

Senator Robert Lau when contacted said several parts of Sibu were flooded on Monday (Sept 7).

“The flood was caused by unusually heavy rainfall in upriver areas over the last few days and this also coincided with king tide,” he told New Sarawak Tribune on Tuesday (Sept 8).

Apart from that, he also said the stretch from Jalan Ek Dee/ Jalan Lanang to Jalan Khoo Peng Loong was flooded too.

“This was because the stretch of road does not have any bund built. However, thankfully, the state government has agreed to fund the bunds and pumping stations for this section of the road,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Lau said the section along Jalan Lanang that has the bund built (from upper Lanang to Ek Dee), was not affected by flood on Monday (Sept 7).
