SIBU: Darul Husna Mosque will become the latest landmark in Sibu Jaya here once it is completed.

Deputy Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs and DBKU) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi says the mosque is built on a five-acre land and costs RM25.8mil.

“Construction is going well since it began in August last year. It is expected to be completed in February next year.

“The Muslim community in Sibu Jaya will be able to use the new mosque by early 2021,” he told the media during a visit to the site yesterday.

Also present was Sarawak Housing Development Corporation (HDC) CEO Mohd Asman Ahmad.

Abdul Rahman, who is also Utilities Minister (Water Supply), said the project was jointly carried out by the state government and Sarawak HDC with agencies and developers.

He explained that the design of the mosque was unique. “It is a kite. Its interior design focuses more on green building concept.

“When it comes to green building, it has two main components. The first is energy reduction and the second is the airway,” he added.

He said the mosque was designed in such a way that it would utilise natural lighting (sunlight) via mirrors and other transparent components to reduce artificial lighting requirements, thus saving energy.

“The air passage in the building will be given attention to provide comfort to the congregation. It will be cooler as it is designed to facilitate more efficient air flow and thus reducing the use of air conditioners,” he said.

According to Dr Abdul Rahman, this was a new design concept that the state government had adopted, and this would be used for future mosques or surau.

He added that the space in the mosque would also reflect Sarawak’s multi-racial society, especially Sibu Jaya’s.

“Darul Husna Mosque will have no problem accommodating 3,000 pilgrims. It will benefit the community, not only for religious activities but also community activities or specific programmes as it has a hall next to it (that can accommodate 600 people),” he added.
