KUCHING: Sarawak is committed to supporting the country’s target of reducing carbon emissions by 45 per cent in 2030 as stipulated in the 2015 Paris Agreement.
Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said he is proud that the Sarawak government has pioneered the transition to renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions.
“This is evident through green energy development initiatives such as hydropower, solar biomass, biofuel, hydrogen and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as well as the implementation of Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) initiative,” he said in his opening address at the First Meeting of the Third Session of the 19th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today (May 6).
Wan Junaidi added that the Sarawak government’s efforts in energy transition and carbon trading have received positive response from industry players globally and will further open up many new investment, business and job opportunities in Sarawak.
“The world is now paying serious attention to the issue of climate change with a commitment to achieve Zero Carbon Target (Net Zero) by 2050.
“We must comply with international standards and agreements such as the 2015 Paris Agreement, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Environment, Social and Governance (ESG),” he said.
In developing Sarawak’s socio-economics, Wan Junaidi said Sarawak is not immune to various challenges at the global level such as international trade issues, climate change, conflicts and regional tensions in several countries, which affect Sarawak’s foreign trade.
“I commend the Sarawak government for emphasising sustainability in every development that is planned in line with the conceptual and philosophical goals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Environment Social and Governance (ESG) towards becoming a sustainable and future-proof region.
‘This is clearly outlined in the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030),” said Wan Junaidi.
