KOTA SAMARAHAN: The construction of the proposed Sarawak Cancer Centre is poised to move forward pending the agreement and approval of both the Sarawak and federal governments, said Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa.

Dr Zaliha revealed that her ministry has engaged in extensive discussions with the Sarawak Government, particularly focusing on forging a collaborative approach between the state and federal governments to realise this vital project.

“My visit today was to examine potential sites for the centre within the vicinity of the Sarawak Heart Centre in Kota Samarahan,” she explained.

“We are currently doing the groundwork, which we will present to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the federal Cabinet, and the Sarawak Government. Once both parties (Sarawak and federal) agree, we are ready to move forward to the next steps.”

Dr Zaliha spoke to reporters after visiting several potential sites for the proposed Sarawak Cancer Centre.

When asked about the project’s anticipated timeline, she deferred to the prime minister and premier for the final decision.

“Of course, I hope there will be good news soon, as we have already been discussing this project for a long time,” she added.

Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian and Deputy Health Minister Lukanisman Awang were also present during the visit.

Previously, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg had stated that the state government was prepared to construct the cancer centre within the 50-acre vicinity of the Sarawak Heart Centre in Kota Samarahan by the end of the year, provided the federal government agreed to the proposal.

He explained that the state government would fund the construction, estimated to cost about RM800 million, with the federal government contributing doctors and equipment.
