KUCHING: A total of 500 mangrove seedlings were planted at Pantai Puteri, Santubong near here, in a programme involving 100 volunteers.
The Greening Initiative campaign in conjunction with the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) yesterday was launched by Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) acting chief executive officer Angelina Bateman aimed at paving the way for the next generation to care for the environment.
Angelina said the RWMF prides itself in being eco-friendly and had continued to hold its yearly greening efforts, including providing shuttle buses from the city, to reduce carbon emissions.
“Also, making it mandatory for vendors to use recyclable or biodegradable tableware and placing recycle bins throughout the festival area as well as composting of food waste.
“This year, in creating awareness of our environment, we are discouraging the sale of single use mineral water bottles and will be placing 20 water dispenser stations at the venue.
“In line with our efforts, we also urge festival-goers to the RWMF to bring their own tumblers or water containers,” she said.
Also present was STB chairman Datuk Abdul Wahab Aziz, Sarawak Forestry Department deputy director Abang Ahmad Abang Morni, RWMF volunteers, STB staff and Kampung Santubong community.
The Greening Initiative – Mangrove planting is a partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the Sarawak Forestry Department and STB.
The mangrove rehabilitation was initiated in 2010 to restore 300 acres of degraded mangrove forest in the Kuching Wetlands.
