KUCHING: The family of the late Nurul Asikin Lan, fondly known as Amoy, has called for justice and hopes that the perpetrator will face an appropriate punishment for taking the 28-year-old’s life.

Her uncle Mohamad Nor Bohari, 64, expressed this sentiment when met by reporters after Amoy’s funeral service at Samariang Islamic Cemetery on Thursday (Dec 19).

“I hope the perpetrator will be given a punishment that is commensurate with what he did.

“We have accepted Amoy’s passing, but we do not want such a tragedy to happen to another family.

“Therefore, I appeal to the government and authorities to take cases like this seriously. Justice must be served,” he said after the funeral.

Mohamad also demanded an apology from the suspect’s family.

“We have no problem meeting the suspect’s family. For me, if the suspect’s family has ‘heart’ and an open mind, they must go and meet Nurul Asikin’s family.

“What our family has received is a very sad and heartbreaking incident. They don’t need to be afraid, nothing wrong with just meeting,” he said.

Speaking about Amoy’s character, Mohamad said that the beloved daughter of the family is an open-minded person, would never get angry and was a cheerful person with everyone.

“I have known Amoy since birth. Nurul Asikin’s mother was my adopted sister. So, she usually did not have any problems with us. She was not the type who liked to hang out.

“Even when she was scolded, she would still smile,” he said.

On Dec 5, Amoy was reported missing after going out with a man she had recently met. Tragically, her body was found in a nearly decomposed state in a drain in Jalan Setia Raja last Sunday (Dec 15).

Police later confirmed her identity through autopsy results and DNA testing.

On Thursday, she was safely laid to rest at Samariang Islamic Cemetery at 1pm in a solemn ceremony attended by her grieving family and close friends.

A 23-year-old local man was arrested following the discovery of her body, and has been remanded until Dec 22 to facilitate investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha confirmed that the motive behind the murder was to rob Amoy of her gold necklace and earrings, which the suspect intended to pawn to fund a trip abroad to watch a football match.
