SIBU: The Sungai Bangkit and Central Katibas NCR Pemakai Menao and Pulau Galau Committee want a private company to halt logging operation in their land to avoid conflicts with native landowners.
In a press statement today, chairman of the committee Anthony Anyau said the company had to do so until a solution is found.
He said on June 7, the committee together with native landowners and representatives of the longhouses in the area gathered at Mile 30, Hariwood Logging Road at Sg Katibas, Song to discuss matters relating to the planted forest exercise inside the area by a private company.
“At the event, a memorandum which contains the wishes of the native landowners was drafted and will be submitted to the company concerned, state leaders and the higher authorities with hopes to see a win-win situation,” he added.
A miring ceremony was also conducted to seek divine help.
Anthony said the committee was given the task to monitor the illegal logging in the areas of Pulau Galau and Pemakai Menoa as such practices are against the Iban Adat and custom.
