BINTULU: The public is reminded to always practice and cultivate the culture of maintaining hand hygiene by thoroughly washing hands with proper methods.
Deputy state director of Health Sarawak (Medical), Dr. Azlee Ayob emphasised the importance and awareness of hand cleanliness should be adopted by the entire community and healthcare personnel.
Among the aspects to adhere to hand hygiene are increasing and reinforcing compliance rates in hygiene practices, reducing Healthcare Associated Infections rates, enhancing knowledge, training related to hand hygiene and infection control activities, and ensuring that hand hygiene practices are implemented in all institutions, healthcare facilities, and expanded further into the community.
“As we are aware, healthcare workers such as doctors and nurses are constantly exposed to bacterial and viral infections while handling patients. Without proper hand hygiene practices, individuals can be exposed to various diseases such as Acinetobacter, MRSA, E-Coli, and Salmonella.”
“Inadvertently, these practices will help reduce patient hospitalisation, decrease antibiotic resistance, repeated treatments, morbidity, and mortality,” he said during the launching ceremony of World Hand Hygiene Day Seminar at the Wisma Bintulu auditorium today (July 4).
Also present at the event were the political secretary to the Sarawak Premier, Angellie Stephen Raja, Bintulu Hospital director Dr. Suzalinna Sulaiman, and Bintulu District Health officer Dr. Melvin Chung Hsien Liang.
