KUCHING: Local youths will have a rare opportunity to attend Harvard-based programmes conducted in the city.
Sarawak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) president Datuk Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg said the programmes would focus on youth leadership to equip youths in charting the country’s future development.
“The programmes are focused on the youths along with the theme which emphasises on leadership which is beneficial to the young generation,” he said yesterday in a press conference on the training programme organised by SCCI in collaboration with Sunway College.
Centre for Asia Leadership (CAL) co-founder and president Samuel Hung Soo Kim explained the three programmes to be held by CAL in August.
The programmes are the Asia Leadership Conference (ALC), Executive Leadership School (ELS) and Asia Leadership Youth (ALY) Camp. 10 speakers from Harvard will be attending to engage with the participants.
“The ALC is a one-day programme/conference which will be held on August 3 and August 24 in Sibu (Tanahmas Hotel) and Kuching (BCCK) targeting youths from the age of 15 to 22 years old.
“ELS is a three-day programme on August 20 to 22 at Chemsain Building here which targets working adults comprising junior-level managers, government officials, policymakers, entrepreneurs and so on.
“ALY Camp, a five-day programme on August 13 to 17 at Chemsain Building is an expanded version of the ALC targeting the youths,” he explained.
Samuel said among the workshops during the ALC and ALY Camp are adaptive leadership, problem-driven interactive adaption, leadership communications, design thinking and leading and negotiation across boundaries which will help shape the youths’ leadership and entrepreneurship skills, aiming to future-proof Malaysian youth in an age of disruption and rapid change.
“ELS offers participants a career-accelerating learning experience focused on the human side of innovation, a considerable part of which is leadership and initiating change as well as technical problem-solving skills.
“In a highly volatile and fast-changing world, leaders need to grow in both technical expertise and people skills like coaching and mentoring.”
Sunway College Kuching chief executive officer (CEO) Joseph Lim said last year’s ALC at Grand Margherita Hotel here attracted about 250 participants. He hoped to have 300 participants for this year’s conference.
