KOTA SAMARAHAN: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will continue to protect the people of Sarawak through thick and thin as long as it is given the mandate to rule.
In stating this yesterday, Batang Sadong MP Nancy Shukri said she for one would continue to fight for Sarawak in accordance with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
“If it is not GPS, who else or which party can take care of the state?” she asked in her speech on Sunday before the launch of GPS Simunjan branch at Pesta Simunjan 2019 in Simunjan.
In driving home her point, she gave an example, that is, the federal government’s plan to scrap the civil service’s pension scheme.
To this, she asked if Sarawakians were agreeable to the move and prefer Malaya-based parties to govern the state.
Calling for undivided support for the present GPS leaders because it is crucial, Nancy said Sarawak could no longer rely on Malayan political parties to help determine its future.
While reiterating her disappointment over the cancellation of several Barisan Nasional-approved development projects since Pakatan Harapan (PH) took over Putrajaya, she said the state government had no choice but to pay for them using the state’s own fund to ensure that the people would not be deprived of the benefits.
“After the 14th general election, PH cancelled several crucial projects in Sarawak. I would say that this is discrimination against the state,” Nancy said.
She disputed the claims that Sarawak ministers who were part of the previous administration are being vocal of late only because they are now in the opposition.
“Many don’t understand what we were doing in BN. We continuously fought for the state. If we didn’t, how did we get what we want?
“If we didn’t do anything, do you think that you would have tar-sealed roads? Could your children go to school, and would you have Batang Sadong Bridge?
“The thing we didn’t do was fight in public or shout outside like some parties in Malaya. All they do is quarrel and keep barking at each other … and it hasn’t stopped until today,” Nancy said.
