KUCHING: Hawkers operating at Mile 3, Kota Sentosa, Mile 10 and Sungai Maong markets recently received N95 type face masks from Kota Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Batu Kitang branch.
The masks were jointly distributed by Batu Kitang assemblyman and MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang, his deputy Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim, staff and councillors from MPP and SUPP Batu Kitang.
In a statement Friday, Lo noted that Kuching registered very unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings for weeks. Those working outdoors should take precautionary measures until the situation improved.
“I would like to advise residents, especially senior citizens and children, to refrain from outdoor activities until the air quality improves.
“Children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with chronic lung or heart disease should avoid or minimise outdoor activities. If they have to be outdoors for several hours, an N95 face mask may help them reduce their exposure,” he said.
He reminded the public to adhere to the haze health advisory. In most cases, it is still safe to carry on with outdoor activities. However, drinking plenty of water may help symptoms such as dry or itchy throat.
“Each individual’s reaction to pollutants may vary, and the amount of physical activity or exertion that can be performed differs according to your health status or physical capacity. Should you encounter symptoms or discomfort, please take additional measures to prevent further exposure,” Lo advised.
