Following his recent win in the Jepak By-Election on November 4, Iskandar Turkee is now the newest member in the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly.
Iskandar’s composed and unassuming demeanour has captured the attention of both constituents and political observers alike. This distinctive trait sets him apart in the realm of politics, where charisma and confidence often take centre stage.
New Sarawak Tribune: How has your experience been since assuming the position of Jepak assemblyman?
Since my appointment as the Jepak assemblyman, it has brought a different dynamic to my life and that of my family. Previously, as the head of the department, the spotlight wasn’t as intense. However, now, everywhere I go, I am now addressed as YB, signifying the shift in responsibilities.
In spite of it, I am committed to adapting to this new role and addressing the issues faced by my community in Jepak. My responsibilities extend beyond being a YB; I serve as a bridge between the community and government agencies, ensuring that their concerns are addressed wisely.
What is your expectation for Jepak?
What I see is the need to look at things from various angles, especially concerning infrastructure. We’ll assess it by zone, but prioritise basic needs first. We are also collaborating with the relevant ministry to secure funds to address rural issues.
What about the young people in Jepak?
My focus extends to the youth. Understanding their interests is key; we can’t organise something and expect them to be interested. At the same time, we can support them in terms of employability even without a university degree. Nowadays, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is highly marketable due to its hands-on skills and experience.
What are some of your hobbies?
In the past, I was actively involved in tennis. At home, I enjoy spending time in the kitchen, experimenting with new recipes and sharing them with my family.
However, nowadays, I engage in these activities less frequently due to time constraints. I’ve recently taken up a new hobby – exploring and trying out diverse cuisines whenever I travel. It has become an activity I eagerly anticipate during my journeys.
What is your daily routine like?
Every day, I start my day at 4 in the morning. I always wake up early to perform voluntary prayers before the Fajr prayer, followed by recitation of Surah Yasin. If I have the opportunity, I will perform the Duha prayer.
After that, I carry out my duties as a representative of the people, including providing assistance to the citizens, participating in community programmes, and so on. However, I strive to ensure that my religious practices are not neglected. If I am travelling, I will plan where I need to stop to fulfil my religious obligations. One thing I never miss is reciting Surah Yasin at least once a day, particularly before Fajr.
