KUCHING: The establishment of Village Community Management Council (MPKK) by the federal government will create disunity among village folks.
Lecturer of Faculty of Social Sciences Dr Lucy Sebli said this is because the MPKK will only serve the interest of the federal government, thus a head-on clash with the present system (Village Development and Security Committees headed by Ketua Kaum) looks unavoidable.
“This MPKK may be good in terms on transparency but at the same time it could split the community apart,” she said, adding the current system has served the state well.
Lucy said the federal government should also consider the financial implications.
“The federal government had said it did not have the money but then here it wants to form another layer in the local government, which really is unnecessary and a waste of resources,” she pointed out.
She said what seems clear is that it is an attempt by the federal government to interfere in the state government administration.
“This again goes to show that the federal government does not respect the autonomy of the state,” she said.
