VETERAN politician Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh may be already an octogenarian but it is quite clear that he is far from slowing down as a people’s representative.

The Bawang Assan assemblyman who leads Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) remains dedicated to serving the people especially those in his constituency.

To do so effectively, Wong, 81, keeps an eye on his well-being, keeping to a healthy diet regimen without relying on any supplements.

New Sarawak Tribune reporter Fasiha Khushiri caught up with the seasoned politician recently to get a first person account of how he keeps up.

Q: Can Datuk Seri share a bit about your daily routine?

I am now 81 years old, and my hobby is reading. I have been reading now because I know that reading is crucial to enriching our knowledge.

Q: How does Datuk Seri maintain your health?

Certainly, I engage in daily exercise. In my free time, I walk, use the treadmill and also cycle.

Q: Perhaps Datuk Seri could also share some tips to stay youthful and energetic at this age?

People ask me how I still look young and energetic, but I don’t take supplements. I don’t believe in them. Balanced nutrition is essential in my daily life.

I also follow a healthy lifestyle. I need at least seven hours of sleep per day. I go to bed at 11pm and wake up at 6am. That’s my daily routine.

I also expose myself to sunlight because it’s crucial for daily health. Every morning, I sunbathe for at least two hours. This exposure has a positive impact on overall physical health and mental well-being.

Q: How do you foresee the development in Bawang Assan in the next five years?

Bawang Assan is considered an area that has experienced rapid development, even though it is far from the city of Sibu. It is now accessible via roads.

The Sarawak government has also constructed a road connecting this area. Moreover, electricity and water supply is nearly complete, contributing to significant development in Bawang Assan.
