The health and wellbeing of their pets is a priority for many pawparents. From good food, supplements and welfare, pet owners of the era ensure their pets are treated with love and care.

Nutritious homemade meals for your furkids

Many pet owners nowadays emphasise the importance of giving a well-balanced, nutritious diet for their pets. They believe that providing only the best will benefit their pets. Every beneficial vitamin that enters their pet’s body can help shine their coats, establish a stronger immune system, and others.

Recognising this, Chef Paws Pet Chef and Nutritionist Alex Chong aims to cook and produce only the best, high-quality, fresh and healthy pet food.

“A good meal can help pets not only have nice fur and a strong immune system, but also keep their digestive system running smoothly.”

Chong, who has been a chef for nearly two decades, said that he has been working as a chef in Taiwanese cuisine since he was 20 years old. The now 38-year-old revealed that he became a chef in the pet food industry by chance after seeing a job opening in Singapore at the end of 2017.

“I thought this was a good opportunity for me to learn new things and develop new skills,” he said, adding that when he went for the interview to become a ‘Pet Chef’, he was promptly offered the position.

“I worked with this company in Singapore for two years. Unfortunately, I was unable to continue because I opted to return to my hometown, Kuching, owing to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

When Chong returned to Kuching, he realised that his enthusiasm for the pet food industry was one he couldn’t give up. He finally established Chef Paws here after much planning. The pet chef was able to help many pet owners who are pressed for time and prepare a healthy meal for their pets by providing an on-the-go selection of meals for them.

“The majority of my customers have to work long hours. They hardly have time to cook a nutritious meal for their pets. Furthermore, many people are unsure of how to prepare a balanced, nutritious food for their pets.”

Initially, Chong said that not many people understood his Chef Paws endeavour. He added that many pet owners are unaware of the importance of providing a balanced diet for their pets.

“That was difficult at first. However, we advertised our products and their benefits on social media. We also worked with pet stores throughout the city.

“Customers saw changes in their pets after feeding them with the food we prepared. This positive feedback has increased their confidence and trust in us,” he said.

When asked about the difference between commercial kibble and Chef Paws’ homemade food, Chong said that each had advantages. Chef Paws’ emphasis, on the other hand, is on providing cooked meal made from real food that is fresh and healthy.

“Our food is carefully prepared to destroy pathogens while retaining the nutritional integrity of the ingredients and giving all the nutrients your dog or cat requires to thrive. The pack contains no preservatives or food additives.”

Chong updates their social media @chefpaws_kuching on Instagram on a daily basis, and their products are available in Kuching, Kota Samarahan, Bau, Tapah, Serian, Sibu, and Miri.

“We are constantly searching for ways to develop and grow. We also intend to expand our services to cover the entire state of Sarawak.”

The importance of providing a well-balanced diet for your pets

By Pet Chef Alex Chong

  • Protein: Protein and amino acids are the building blocks of your dog’s or cat’s body, responsible for the development of organs and tissues such as tendons, muscles, skin, hair, and blood. Proteins can also function as enzymes, hormones, and antibodies.
  • Mineral: Minerals are behind-the-scenes heroes in your dog’s or cat’s health. They help in your dog’s or cat’s bone and tooth health, blood clotting, muscle function, nerve transmission, nutrient metabolism, and cell function.
  • Vitamin: Vitamins are responsible for a wide range of functions in your dog or cat’s body, including DNA synthesis, nutrient energy release, bone development, eye function, cell structure maintenance, blood clotting, and nerve signal transmission.
  • Carbohydrate: Carbohydrate is a good source of glucose for energy, as well as a source of heat for the body, and it can be stored as glycogen. Fibre is a form of carbohydrate that helps to maintain colon health as well as manage weight and obesity.
  • Fat: Fat provides energy and improves absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and important fatty acids such as omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. These important nutrients aid in the development of healthy joints, brain, and vision in your dog/cat, as well as the maintenance of healthy skin and coat.
