MIRI: Unusually heavy rain caused a rainwater downpipe installed inside the ceiling of the Miri Hospital Emergency and Trauma Department (ETD) became dislodged, causing a leak on Aug 10.
A statement issued by Riaplus Sdn Bhd, the contractor responsible for the construction of the new Miri Hospital Block, said the incident took place at 9 pm, during an intense downpour.
This led to water spilling over into the patient drop-off area of the ETD.
Fortunately, the water leak was contained to the drop-off area and did not affect any clinical spaces.
There were no reported injuries, and hospital services remained uninterrupted.
Riaplus Sdn Bhd’s standby service backup team responded swiftly to the situation, quickly cordoning off the affected area and taking immediate measures to prevent further leakage.
The team sealed off the dislodged downpipe and diverted the water flow.
“The wet area has been dried up by our staff, and we will rectify the downpipes and closely monitor the situation,” Riaplus said.
In light of the incident and the ongoing extreme weather conditions, the company also announced plans to increase the number of rainwater discharge points at the hospital to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Riaplus is apologetic about the inconvenience caused by the incident.
