KUCHING: Heavy downpour across Sarawak are expected to go on until Christmas Eve (Dec 24) in several districts across Sarawak.
Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the western part of the state will experience continuous rainfall starting today (Dec 23) as forecast by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).
“I want the health conditions of the flood victims, particularly the elderly at all temporary flood relief centres (PPS) to be monitored closely to ensure they receive the necessary medical treatment, including sending them for hemodialysis treatment.
“The State Operations Room has been activated and the secretariat is Unit Keselamatan and Penguatkuasaan Negeri (UKPS), “ he told a press conference at Wisma Bapa Malaysia today (Dec 23).
Earlier today, Uggah instructed relevant agencies like JKR to monitor and look into road or bridge damages and act accordingly.
“The Health Department will be monitoring and taking the necessary action to prevent waterborne diseases and Sarawak Energy will monitor electrical safety hazards.
“The Ministry of Local Government and Housing or local authorities will prevent clogged drains and the Department of Agriculture (DOA) will assess damages to crops and livestocks,” he said.
Uggah also said he will monitor the supply of food ensure there is no shortage during the festive season.
On the safety of children, he appealed to parents to monitor their children’s whereabouts and prevent them from going on picnics to flood or landslide prone spots.
