NEW DELHI: Several areas in India’s northern hilly states, namely Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, received significant snowfall over the past 24 hours, thus bringing down temperature and disrupting normal life, government sources said on Thursday.

Several roads, including national highways passing through these states, have been shut for traffic as snow up to 15 centimetres was recorded in these areas, reported Xinhua.

The India Meteorological Department predicted more snowfall over the next couple of days.

Local media reported that normal life in parts of Himachal Pradesh faced disruptions as tribal areas and high-altitude regions witnessed the first significant snowfall of the year, leading to the closure of around 134 roads, including four national highways.

The situation was equally bad in parts of the neighbouring state of Uttarakhand. Badrinath area has continuously received heavy snowfalls since Wednesday. The famous Badrinath temple was seen covered in a blanket of snow on Thursday. – BERNAMA-XINHUA
