SIBU: The Malaysian Islamic Welfare Organisation (Perkim) Sarawak has been urged to play a role in the government’s efforts to form a ‘masyarakat Madani’ made up of various races in Malaysia.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari said it needs to be done due to the various social problems, especially among teenagers.

Thus, he advised Perkim to try deal with related issues such as moral decay, and unethical social and cultural symptoms through its preaching and education programmes.

“As an NGO that supports the community, Perkim can also help in dealing with issues related to poverty through various programmes and activities. In this regard, changing the community mindset to be independent is crucial as they need to work hard and not depend entirely on help from any party.

“Likewise, education is not only important to provide knowledge and information, but to provide awareness and form positive thinking so that they can use the facilities and incentives provided by the government wisely to improve the quality of life,” he said.

He stressed that the implementation of programmes holistically or comprehensively involving all sectors is more effective and can have an impact on dealing with various problems.

“Da’wah and education activities can be carried out together and interspersed with recreational activities to attract the participation of members both the young and the elderly,” he said.

Abang Johari also hoped that the community can adjust their lives and take advantage of the facilities and incentives provided by the government to ease the financial burden and daily needs in the current uncertain economic situation.

“There are many facilities and incentives allocated by the government at the moment, both at the federal and state government levels.
