KUCHING: A family struggling with poverty was saddled with an additional burden as their 29-year-old son is bed-ridden due to a tumor in his brain.
The family in Kampung Bintawa Ulu has brought their son back from Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and needs tubal feeding, in addition to receiving 24-hour care.
Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii who heard of the family’s plight donated a hospital bed, adult pampers and some financial contributions to cover the medical expenses, yesterday.
Dr Yii said he paid a house visit to the family to understand the struggles they face.
“He is currently being taken care of by his parents. I was informed that he was in a coma for a while and even when he woke up, he has lost most of his bodily functions and needs to be cared by others.
“His elderly parents had no choice but to stop their small stall business selling drinks in order to care for their bed-ridden son and also their grandson,” said Dr Yii.
Three days ago, Dr Yii met the family while he was visiting the Tanah Puteh clinic and was told of the family’s plight.
The parents told him that they lack proper equipment to care of their son including a proper hospital bed. Their son has to sleep on an old mattress on the floor and this made it very hard to change his clothing, clean or even feed him.
The parents were grateful for the assistance rendered and said that they were lucky to have met Dr Yii as they arrived at the Tanah Puteh clinic at around the same time when Dr Yii was visiting.
