Help fight drug abuse, community leaders told

SIBU: Community leaders are urged to cooperate with the police in fighting drug abuse in their respective villages

Education, Innovation and Talent Development Assistant Minister Dr Annuar Rapaee stressed that such illegal activities were common not only in city areas but also in villages and other parts of rural areas.

“As leaders, we must be sensitive to these drug abuse activities. We should monitor all activities involving our youth to prevent them from being involved in such illegal activities.

“We are aware that drugs are the main enemy of our country which can damage individuals’ moral values and cause other criminal problems,” explained the Nangka assemblyman.

He said this when officiating at the closing ceremony of the Drug-Free Community Workshop Programme organised by the Sibu Community Leaders Committee (KMKK) (Malay/Melanau) at Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) Sibu auditorium, today.

Among the invited speakers were representatives of the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division of Sibu district police, Inspector Muhammad Noor Hisham Mat and Sergeant  Charlie Chaplin Raymond Morris, officials from the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) and independent speaker Leong Bon Huat.

The purpose of the programme was to raise awareness about the dangers of drug substances in society and combat drug activities involving youth

“I would like to remind to leaders and village committees (JKKK) to always inform the police of any criminal activities that occur in their respective villages, especially related to drugs,” said Dr Annuar.

Also present were the Head of the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department of the Sibu district police, DSP Ariffin Bahar as well as representatives of various non-government organisations (NGOs), JKKK and community leaders.
