KUCHING: After visiting a septic sludge treatment plant operated by Sar-Alam Indah Sdn Bhd in Matang yesterday, Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman Datuk Peter Minos has once again appealed to the people to help keep Samarahan neat and clean.

He said that a local council alone could not upkeep cleanliness hence public cooperation was required.

“A local council can cut the grass, collect the rubbish, sweep the streets and roads, as well as repair drains and street lights, but putting waste in rubbish bins and keeping compounds clean are every citizen’s duty,” he emphasised.

He said a council could not do everything as in most cases, it lacked funding and manpower.

“When local councils and citizens work together and cooperate, towns and cities can be very clean, safe, and green.

“If the Japanese in the city of Tokyo can be neat and clean, why can’t we Malaysians be the same? Just improve our habits and we can do it,” he said.

Minos added that people should be socially responsible by not throwing empty plastic bottles and wastes by roadsides or in drains, but instead use rubbish bins.

At the same time, he appealed to the public to not dump rubbish illegally.

“Avoid using styrofoam and plastic for food and drink wrappings because they are health hazards. Do not clog the drains as this can cause flash floods,” he advised.

Meanwhile, he praised Sar-Alam Indah Sdn Bhd for their desludging efforts in Samarahan and for following the regulations as stipulated in the Local Council Ordinance.
