KUCHING: Young voters are encouraged to exercise their right in the upcoming 15th General Election in order to be heard.
Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii said young people might not be politically aware but that did not mean they could not distinguish right from wrong.
“I believe young people are not just leaders of tomorrow, but they are also the leaders of today. You guys have the power to affect and change not only the course of your own lives, but also the direction of the state and the country.
“You have a significant influence on the decisions our politicians make to create a better Malaysia. You are responsible for Malaysia’s bright future.”
He later presented incentives to Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) top scorers at the Sarawak Democratic Action Party headquarters here on Thursday (July 14).
“Come out and vote, and fight for things that are seen wrong as everyone should play their part in making a change.”
He said in order to contribute to the future of Malaysia, young people must make a concerted effort to educate themselves, develop their skills, and become aware of the problems that Malaysians face.
Dr Yii, the third youngest MP in Malaysia and the youngest MP in Sarawak, urged young people to constantly push themselves to perform better and advised them to focus on small things in life to gradually see greater achievements.
He said many people might not understand the value of punctuality, but being on time would help make a good impression, particularly in business deals.
“Small is the new big, so focus on the small and you will succeed in the big. Never look down on small things.
“Dream big, dig deep, take small steps, and last long to achieve more in your milestone.”
The incentives were given to a total of 52 SPM top achievers who scored at least 6As. One recipient scored 11As, while 11 others scored 10As.
