KUCHING: The state government is fully supportive of any initiative that enhances the capacity of technologists and technicians.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said it is important for industry players, education, and skilled development institutions as well as government agencies to work together in promoting and developing technological talents.

He said trade associations and learned societies must play their role in this journey too.

“I am pleased to know that learned societies such as the Association of Professional Technicians and Technologists (APTT) that is based in Sarawak is working closely with the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) to facilitate this collaboration and develop a framework for advancing Sarawak technicians and technologists.

“Let us work together to provide them with the necessary training, resources, and opportunities for growth, so that they can continue to excel in their professions and contribute to the advancement of our economy and society. As the saying goes, if you want to go far, go together,” he said.

He was officiating at the MBOT Borneo Symposium 2023 today at the Borneo Cultures Museum Auditorium, here.

Abang Johari commended the MBOT for organising the symposium, themed ‘Preparing a Sustainable Workforce’.

He pointed out that highly skilled talents are the backbone of all economies as they are the professionals who drive institutions, keep factories running smoothly, help farmers to produce more yields, ensure efficiency of machinery and drive innovation forward.

“In all industries, we need professions such as engineers and researchers before we can produce any technology or services. However, technologists and technicians are often overlooked, resulting in a shortage in many crucial industries which hamper our ability to be more competitive and productive,” he said.

Abang Johari revealed that Sarawak currently has approximately 3,291 certified technicians and professional technologists.

“The state is targeting to register 10,000 certified technicians and technologists by the year 2025, this is quite tough and a tall order. However, the state’s technological endeavour needs professional talents to deliver their service, especially to the industry,” he added.
