KUCHING: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas urged young Malaysians to remember the sacrifices of national heroes, who ensured the nation’s peace and prosperity.
Without their noble sacrifices during our country’s period of turmoil, we wouldn’t be enjoying this peaceful, harmonious, and prosperous time,” he told reporters after attending the funeral of the late Corporal (Rtd) Etim Jam, one of the last six Malaysians holding the Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa (SPGP) medal, the nation’s highest gallantry award.
Etim was laid to rest at the Heroes’ Grave here today (June 7).
Uggah specifically highlighted Etim’s bravery and service, crediting them for contributing to the country’s safety.
“The younger generation should learn about their history and the challenges our heroes faced.
“While we are no longer at war, there are new challenges that require bravery, the right attitude, and unified efforts to secure a bright future for Malaysia,” he added.
Uggah also extended his condolences to Etim’s family.
“Personally, I want to express my deepest gratitude to Etim. Because of his sacrifices, we have the peace and prosperity we enjoy today,” he said.
Etim’s funeral service was held earlier at St. Thomas’s Cathedral. Family members, police and army officers, and members of the public paid their respects at both the funeral and burial ceremony.
