SIBU: The semiconductor industry which plays a crucial role in today’s fast-paced technological world offers high-income opportunities.

“It’s understood that IC design and chip manufacturing in particular offer starting salaries of RM4,000 to RM6,000 for skilled professionals,” said Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.

“Sectors like semiconductors, technology, engineering, and other STEM fields are expanding rapidly, opening up significant opportunities for long-term career success,” he said.

He was speaking at the IC Design Make-A-Thon 2024 closing ceremony at University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) on Sunday (Oct 27).

Dr Annuar added that demand for careers in this field will be high and highly relevant as the world advances in technology.

He also highlighted that modern medicine relies on sophisticated technology, which necessitates growth in semiconductor industries to produce advanced medical equipment.

“A career in the semiconductor industry, particularly in IC design, not only provides job security but also the opportunity to be part of a global industry shaping the future,” he said.

As UTS Chairman, Dr. Annuar stressed the importance of offering courses aligned with the latest industry trends in technology, creating career-ready graduates.

“At UTS, we focus on courses relevant to future technology needs in STEM-based industries. We aim for students to master these skills, which will secure jobs aligned with their studies.

“I remind the UTS board and lecturers that new courses should meet future industry requirements,” he said.
