MIRI: The high cost of gas pipe installations in residential and commercial areas is largely due to a shortage of qualified personnel, according to Miri MP Chiew Choon Man.
Chiew revealed that he has received numerous complaints regarding the expensive installation costs, attributing this to the limited number of certified gas fitters available in the region.
“I have previously received complaints about the high cost of installing gas pipes for residential areas as well as for business outlets,”he stated.
To address this issue, he announced his intention to collaborate with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and other agencies in Miri to offer specialised Gas Fitter training courses.
“Through the operation of this course in Miri, we can produce more competent Gas Fitters to meet the needs of the market in Miri. This, in turn, can stabilise the price of gas pipeline installation in Miri,” he explained.
“Additionally, this will also increase employment opportunities for people in Miri who are interested in acquiring these skills.”
The proposed training programmes will include courses for gas engineers, gas engineering supervisors, gas fitters, and other responsible persons involved in gas installations.
He noted the importance of safety equipment, such as gas detectors, and the need for certified professionals to ensure safe and cost-effective installations.
Chiew’s remarks came after his visit to the Faculty of Engineering at Unimas in Kuching on Tuesday (Aug 13).
The visit aimed to evaluate the implementation and organisation of existing gas courses at the institution.
“This course is crucial in meeting current industry standards and providing maximum benefits to participants. We also want to explore the procedures and administrative regulations related to the program, including management procedures, curriculum, and assessment systems,” Chiew added.
He expressed his gratitude to the faculty and all involved in organising the event, highlighting the importance of such initiatives in addressing the skills gap and improving the local economy.
