KUCHING: A motorist who rammed through a movement control order (MCO) roadblock was arrested after a high-speed chase yesterday.
In the 4.30pm incident, a 29-year-old man from Melaka who was under the influence of drugs was stopped by police personnel at Mile 12th off Kuching-Serian intersection for inspection. He fled the scene and drove against the flow of traffic headed to Siburan.
Police attempted to stop the motorist but he rammed through a Covid-19 roadblock and sped off, nearly knocking a police officer manning the roadblock.
A chase ensued with the police trailing the car to the Mile 13th roundabout off Jalan Kuching-Serian. At this point several MPVs joined in the pursuit.
Police had to force the motorist who was driving recklessly to stop his car.
The car stopped at a roundabout after crashing into a divider and collided with a compact car. The man fled the scene to the opposite lane but was chased by policemen and subsequently arrested.
Commissioner of Police Datuk Aidi Ismail when contacted confirmed the case. He said the suspect was tested positive for methamphetamine.
“The suspect will be remanded to facilitate police investigation and to be charged on Monday,” Aidi said.
Police also seized a small package containing illicit substances believed to be drugs under the driver’s seat when police inspected the car.
Meanwhile, Aidi pointed out that a total of 48 individuals including three women were arrested for flouting the MCO.
“Most of them were detained at roadblock,” he said.
He pointed out that 43 individuals were released on police bail while the other five were being remanded for acting aggressively against the police.
The cases are being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code and Regulation 7 (1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures in the Infected Areas) 2020.
Those found guilty could be imprisoned up to two years and fined up to RM10,000 or both.
