SEBANGAN: High speed internet access is now available in three localities, namely Sg. Ladong, Sg. Bilis and Senangeh in Sebuyau – a project undertaken by the Sarawak Multimedia Authority Rural Telecommunication (SMART) tower and Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (MySRBN) service.
According to a statement issued by Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SEDC), Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak Datuk Julaihi Narawi officiated at the launch yesterday (Nov 13).
Chief executive officer of SDEC Sudarnoto Osman said that through the Sarawak, Linking, Urban, Rural and Nation (SALURAN) initiative, he hopes it will be a starting point towards better internet connectivity in Sarawak and enable Sarawakians to stay connected and bridge the digital gap between rural and urban areas.
“SDEC aims to target 36,000 premises to enjoy MySRBN service by end of the year 2023.
“The Sarawak government introduced the SALURAN initiative by expanding and upgrading 4G coverage and among the components under SALURAN are the SMART and MySRBN services,” he said.
He added that with the aid of these initiatives, the rural community as well as small businesses can now use data services in making calls easily, bringing communications to greater levels either in their daily life usage or to spread their businesses.
Sudarnoto said mainstream mobile providers like Digi, Maxis, Celcom, and UMobile can now leverage on SMART infrastructure thanks to Multi-Operator Core Network (MOCN) technology, allowing users a seamless communication experience without having to bring additional phones and sim cards only to enjoy internet connectivity.
“This sharing strategy may reduce overall operating costs in addition to lowering mobile providers’ investments in new infrastructure.
“MySRBN, on the other hand, makes use of Fixed Wireless Broadband (FWB) technology, enabling faster service deployment by utilising existing infrastructure,” he said.
He added the government determined that every Sarawakian in every nook and corner must have access to home broadband at an affordable cost to enable seamlessly learning, e-commerce, internet banking and other economic activities.
Sudarnoto said rural and suburban communities in Sarawak have unlimited access to the internet through MySRBN, which offers download speeds of up to 30 Mbps.
“The MySRBN home broadband package, which is now available in Senanggeh, Sg Ladong, and Sg. Bilis, is designed for home usage,” he said.
He added that anyone within the coverage area is eligible to register online for MySRBN home broadband.
