KUCHING: Nearly 80 percent of work on the Pan Borneo Highway project in Sarawak has been completed.
Senior Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof who disclosed this said another stretch which involved road alignment work in Julau would be officially open next week.
He said caretaker Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg would officiate at the event.
The Julau alignment stretches from the KJD junction to the Julau junction and was opened to the public on Oct 20 this year.
Speaking at a press conference after attending an engagement session with the media at Kuching Waterfront Hotel on Sunday (Nov 14), Fadillah said another package of the project involved the Serian-Pantu alignment which was now 99 percent complete.
In a related development he assured that his ministry had taken note of issues raised by commuters concerning road signage being not put up along the Pan Borneo Highway.
“We have instructed the companies as well as safety officers to take the necessary actions to make sure that proper signages are put up so as to avoid any confusion and accidents on the road,” he said.
To another question on the set speed limit on the Pan Borneo Highway, Fadillah said at the moment the proposed speed limit of 90kmh (kilometre per hour) remained.
“Because it will be a dual carriageway road, people might drive faster … so, in terms of traffic management, we will relook into what is best.
“Having said that, we will work with the Ministry of Transport as well as the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and they will make the final decision (on the speed limit),” he said.
For the record, the Julau alignment covers from the KJD junction to the Julau junction and was opened to the public on Oct 20 this year.
