KUCHING: The Sarawak Harakah Islamiah (HIKMAH) supreme council members have unanimously expressed their strong opposition to the brutal and provocative acts of both extremists and radicals that recently went viral on social media for disrespecting the Quran.
The president of Sarawak HIKMAH, Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr) Abdul Aziz Husain said the organisation strongly condemned the action of Danish politician, Rasmus Paludan who burned the Holy Quran in front of the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden on Jan 21.
HIKMAH also opposes the provocative action of the right-wing leader in The Hague, Netherlands, Edwin Wagensveld who tore several pages from a copy of the Quran and burned them in a pan.
“Both acts of provocation are clearly organised hate crimes targeted at the world’s Muslims deliberately in the name of freedom,” he was quoted as saying by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) yesterday.
On the same note, he called on the global community to reject hate speech or violence against the issue.
Instead, he emphasised the need for respect of religious symbols and the need to avoid encouraging hatred by disparaging religion.
“HIKMAH as an Islamic non-governmental organisation (NGO) always supports all forms of efforts that maintain harmony and unity among plural societies,” he added.
