SARIKEI: A dialogue session on the Sarawak Blue Carbon Project was recently held in Kampung Selalang, marking the inaugural Blue Carbon Project in Malaysia, particularly in Sarawak.
Organised by Lembaga Amanah Kebajikan Islam Kuala Rajang (LAKIKR) in collaboration with Worldview Climate Solutions (WCS) Malaysia Sdn Bhd, the event brought together more than 150 local residents, community leaders, and representatives from government agencies.
“The event explains the project’s objectives, discusses its potential and challenges, and seeks collaboration from the local community to ensure its success.
“The project will focus on the Tanjung Manis area, Sarikei, and its surroundings,” LAKIKR said in its press release.
Notably, a memorandum of agreement was signed between LAKIKR and WCS on September 11.
A total of 10,000 hectares of mangrove forest has been entrusted to WCS for the purpose of conducting mangrove carbon stock studies.
The implementation of the project will involve the local community, thereby creating employment opportunities for residents within the project area.
For the record, WCS is a subsidiary of the Worldview International Foundation (WIF), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in Bangkok, Thailand.
The primary focus of WCS is the reforestation of mangrove areas for carbon credit projects.
