BAU: The History subject taught in schools plays a crucial role in helping students understand how independence was achieved.
Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Paku principal, Anek Apok said history not only provides valuable insights into the country’s past but also fosters an appreciation for the sacrifices made by independence fighters.
“Independence did not come about suddenly. Independence is not an event that fell from the sky. Independence is the result of the struggle of our past leaders.
“That is why the History subject taught in schools is a mandatory subject to pass,” he said.
He was quoted as making these remarks at the opening of the Pentarama X Kelab Malaysiaku programme held at Dewan Seri Bestari, SMK Paku here Wednesday (Aug 28).
He added that the true meaning of independence can only be fully understood through the study of history, a depth that other subjects do not offer.
“That is why we must remember the independence struggle every year and celebrate it with the spirit of unity, regardless of race or religion,” he said.
Meanwhile, Bau District Information Officer Sumardi Sugiman commended the management of SMK Paku for their consistent efforts in organising the National Month celebration.
He noted that the programme, rich with patriotic spirit, could further ignite the love for the country among the younger generation.
He also mentioned that the programme serves as a platform for the Information Department to promote the flying of the Jalur Gemilang while encouraging greater public participation in the National Month celebration.
Sumardi urged everyone to support the “1 House 1 Jalur Gemilang” (1R1JG) Campaign as a symbol of patriotism and an expression of love for Malaysia.
Throughout National Month, the Information Department is collaborating with the Department of Education to run the Pentarama X Kelab Malaysiaku Pilot Programme, involving 38 selected schools nationwide.
In Sarawak, participating schools include SMK Chung Hua Miri, SMK Paku Bau, SMK Belawai Tanjung Manis, SMK Three Rivers Mukah, SMK Muara Tuang Samarahan, SMK Matang Jaya, and SMK Bako in Kuching.
