KUCHING: Athletes have been urged to capitalise on their home-ground advantage to clinch the overall championship at the upcoming Para Malaysia Games (SUKMA) XXI in Sarawak.
Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said that the athletes should be familiarising themselves with the competition venues.
“This is the third day of their training at the actual venues. Previously, they couldn’t access them due to ongoing SUKMA events,” she told reporters at the Sarawak Stadium today (Sept 2).
Fatimah noted that the athletes are adhering to a six-day fixed training schedule, focusing on technique.
“InsyaAllah, we aim for no less than 83 gold medals,” she said.
She commended the athletes’ high spirits and expressed confidence in their performance at the Games later this month.
Inspired by their SUKMA success, I believe the athletes are even more motivated to excel. Our goal is to ensure Sarawak reclaims the overall championship for Para SUKMA,” she said.
In the previous Para SUKMA in 2022, she revealed that Sarawak narrowly lost to Sabah by 5 gold medals.
“We understand the feeling of a close race. Today, we have a home-field advantage,” she added.
Also present were Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang, Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap, Tanjung Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang, and political secretary to the Premier, Angellie Stephen Raja.
