KUCHING: The Silambam team exemplifies the state’s multiracial harmony, with athletes from various ethnic backgrounds coming together to compete.
Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said this diversity was a testament to Sarawak’s spirit of unity through sports.
“Hikmah Exchange has graciously opened its doors to Sarawak’s athletes, allowing them to familiarise themselves with the competition venue for Malaysian Games (SUKMA) 2024,” she said to the reporter while visiting the SUKMA XXI athletes at the venue today (Aug15).
Fatimah said, as host of this prestigious event, Sarawak made every effort to ensure its athletes are well-prepared and ready to shine.
“The Silambam competition is scheduled from August 20 to 22, and the athletes continue their intensive training venue at Hikmah Exchange.
“The venue is almost fully set up, with only the backdrop remaining. The podium and scoreboard are ready, and the atmosphere is charged with anticipation and excitement. The management and athletes are deeply grateful to Hikmah Exchange for this invaluable opportunity,” she said.
“This year’s Sukma marks the return of Silambam, a sport last featured in 2013. Sarawak is proud to have 18 athletes representing the state in this category, with 14 medals up for grab.
Every member of the team, from coaches to athletes and committee members are fully committed to achieving the best possible results.
“The team consists of a diverse mix of ethnicities, with four Malays, two Bidayuh, three Iban, and two Chinese athletes. The selection process involved long and short lists, ensuring that only the best and most prepared athletes represent Sarawak,” she said.
“The athletes are modest but determined, setting their sights on winning multiple medals, and becoming the overall champion in Silambam.
She added that Sarawak’s athletes are ready and eager to showcase their skills and sportsmanship at SUKMA 2024, embodying the spirit and resilience of the state.
