KUCHING: A woman was fined RM700 by the Magistrates’ Court here today (Mar 28) for aiding and abetting in providing a premises for gambling activities.

Homeowner Sim, 66, pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 4(1)(c) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 and could be punished under Section 4(1) of the same act.

Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi ordered the accused to serve three months in prison if the fine is not paid.

According to the charge, she committed the offence at a house in Taman Victoria, around 3.40pm on Jan 14.

If convicted, she could be imprisoned for up to three years or fined not less than RM5,000 and not more than RM50,000.

Based on the case facts, acting on information received, a police team raided a house believed to be involved in illegal gambling activities.

As a result of the raid, a total of 11 men, including the accused, and seven women were caught gambling on mahjong.

Items seized during the raid included mahjong tiles, various coloured chips, dice, and chairs used for gambling activities.

Investigations revealed that the accused had aided or provided a premises for the gambling activities.

Meanwhile, in the same court, 17 other accused were each fined RM800 or sentenced to one month in prison for offences under Section 6(1) of the Open Gaming Houses Act.

Prosecution of the case was handled by prosecuting officer Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin while the accused were not represented by legal counsel.
