KUCHING: Hope Place has responded to a desperate cry for help from an abandoned senior citizen who has been struggling to make ends meet.

The non-governmental organisation (NGO) is providing basic food aid to Dayang Gundi, 57, in the hopes that this would ease her burden.

She had received quarantine aid from Hope Place a few months ago and she once again asked for their help recently.

Dayang, who has been living in Sg Apong by herself after divorcing her husband years ago, has seven adult children. However, none of her children have helped or contacted her.

Although she suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure, she still strives to fend for herself by picking wild vegetables to sell at the Sg Apong market.

She is renting a wooden house for RM290 a month in an area where there are a lot of wooden houses built illegally.

Even though she has been living alone for quite some time, she has friends who come around frequently to keep her company and listen to her burdens.
