KUCHING: Hope Place Kuching is providing assistance and food supplies to a family of eight living in Kampung Bako as Hari Raya Aidilfitri draws near.
The non-governmental organisation (NGO) recently met with Yaman Ali, a 78-year-old water taxi driver, and his wife Jemari Tahir, 75, who are responsible for caring for their four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Yaman works as a water taxi driver to support his family, while his eldest grandchild works in a rice factory, and three others are still attending school.
However, he has health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, but it has not stopped him from going to his boat.
Meanwhile, Jemari also has health issues, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and difficulty standing or walking for extended periods due to a leg problem. The entire family resides in a dilapidated traditional wooden house located near the river.
Upon inspection, Hope Place discovered that the family lacks proper plumbing, particularly in their toilet. The NGO is providing the family with basic food aid and adult diapers for Jemari.
The family applied for financial aid from the Social Welfare Department last year and is still waiting for approval.
