KUCHING: Hope Place, a local non-governmental organization (NGO), has extended its support to a 90-year-old man residing here after being alerted to his situation by a compassionate individual.

Jong Sze Khin, the nonagenarian, lives with his two adult children at Jalan Tangga Bypass Serian.

Despite his relatively good physical appearance for his age, Jong suffers from kidney failure and has weakened legs.

He relies on a walking cane for mobility. Kind-hearted individuals occasionally assist Jong by taking him to the hospital for check-ups and medication.

Jong’s 59-year-old son, Poh, and his 56-year-old daughter are both unemployed. Poh collects recyclable metals for sale as a means of generating income.

Poh revealed that he previously battled depression and, in 2021, suffered a severe head injury that resulted in a week-long hospitalisation.

Jong’s daughter, on the other hand, avoids contact with others and retreats to her room whenever the NGO visits.

The family resides in a People’s Housing Project for the Hardcore Poor (PPRT) house situated along the main road. Although they have access to water and electricity, they rely on firewood for cooking and boiling water.

Every day, Poh ventures into the nearby forest to gather dry wood for their household fuel. In addition to the income generated from selling recycled metal, the family receives a monthly welfare aid of RM300 from the state.

Hope Place provides regular assistance to the family in the form of basic food aid.

For further information or to lend support, interested individuals can contact Hope Place or Persatuan Kebajikan Harapan Kuching (PKHK) at 082-505987.

The organisation operates from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, and from 8 am to 12 pm on Saturdays.

Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated, and receipts will be provided upon request. Contributions can be made directly to the bank account MBB: 511289001160 or through the NGO’s Facebook page, where the Sarawak Pay/S PAY GLOBAL QR code is available for donations.
