KUCHING: A couple at Kampung Tabuan Hilir here received support from Hope Place Kuching recently after misfortune befell them earlier this year.
The plight of Emelliana Sahari was made known to the NGO by a concerned member of the public living near there.
Emelliana, 47, and her husband, Kasar Drahman, 45, are both only earning daily wages. Kasar is a construction worker while Emelliana used to work at a seafood restaurant.
“However, in February this year, Emelliana had to amputate her left leg due to her diabetes. According to her, she stopped work back in 2020 because her health deteriorated. Furthermore, Emelliana has high blood pressure and between that and her high blood sugar, she is weak physically,” Hope Place said in a statement on Monday (April 1).
“The childless couple live a simple life, always taking care of one another’s needs. Although they stay in a rundown wooden house, with leaking roof and rotting wooden stairs, the couple are thankful for what they have.”
However for now, Kasar and Emelliana are staying with Kasar’s sister nearby. As Emelliana is still in the recovery stage, she needs assistance while her husband works all day.
Kasar’s sister, according to Emelliana, is Godsent. Not only did she let Emelliana use a room on the ground floor for easy access, she is always there beside Emelliana, assisting her in whatever she can. Their other relatives also gave Emelliana a second-hand wheelchair.
Emelliana just applied for social welfare and Baitulmal assistance. Hope Place is supporting Emelliana with supplies of adult diapers, mainly for her night use.
