KUCHING: Hope Place is supporting a family from Roban who moved to Kuching in search of better opportunities but now finds themselves in a desperate situation as their hopes for a fresh start fade.
“Daiyon Wong, 27, his wife, and their two young children reside in a cramped room in Bandar Baru Semariang without electricity and are facing mounting financial difficulties.
“The family’s struggles took an even tougher turn when their youngest son, Aron Kalon, just four years old, was diagnosed with failure to thrive earlier this year.
“Although Aron is as lively as any young boy, his physical development appears delayed, with signs of malnourishment adding to his parents’ concerns,” the non-governmental organisation said in a press release yesterday (Nov 14).
Daiyon, who previously worked as a self-employed rubber tapper in Roban, decided to relocate to Kuching, hoping to find a better livelihood. However, lacking formal education or qualifications, he has only managed to secure work as a daily-paid construction labourer, earning below minimum wage.
Despite these challenges, the family’s six-year-old son has started school, bringing a glimmer of hope. Aron’s mother, Yak Anggas, 24, remains hopeful for a brighter future, particularly for her children, despite their current circumstances.
The family’s case was brought to light by a social worker from Sarawak General Hospital, and Hope Place has stepped in to provide essential food supplies and milk powder for Aron.
