KUCHING: The construction of the Batang Lupar Bridge will put an end to ferry-related tragedies, said Kota Samarahan Member of Parliament Rubiah Wang.

Alluding to the latest tragedy at Triso ferry at the turn of the year, which claimed nine lives, she hoped such a tragedy will not happen again in the future.

“We are very grateful for the concern of the chief minister and the state government who revived the Batang Lupar Bridge project.

“The Triso ferry tragedy that killed a family of nine earlier this year will definitely be remembered and became a scar in the hearts of the people,” she said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

She said the 4.8-km-long bridge is one of the most important components in the coastal road and second trunk road project, and it is expected to be completed in 2025.

“The bridge is scheduled to be built after the completion of Batang Sadong and Batang Samarahan bridges.

She said the bridge is special because it has a 598.8-metre cable stayed main span that resembles several famous bridges such as the San Francisco Bridge in the United States and Penang Bridge,” she said.
