SIBU: More hospitals in the country should prepare to establish more departments or sections of Chinese medicine in the future.

Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said, in order to further develop its use, hospitals are encouraged to explore the combination of Chinese and Western medicine just like the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

At the NCI medical department, Tiong said acupuncture and herbal medicine are used to complete treatments.

“Patients are treated with anti-cancer drugs to reduce chronic pain and it helps in the treatment,” he said.

He said this in his speech which was read by councillor Joshua Ting Fu Ying at the Asia Skills College and Vocational College of Asian Traditional Chinese Medicine graduation ceremony on Saturday (Feb 4).

Tiong, who is also the Bintulu MP mentioned that Chinese medical practitioners have also registered as certified practitioners in accordance with the requirements of the Traditional and Complementary Medicine (T&CM) Act 2016.

“With the registration, it has built the confidence of the public to believe in the effectiveness of traditional medicine,” he said.

On a related matter, Tiong also hoped that traditional Chinese medicine can also become one of the attractions of medical tourism in the country.

The Dudong assemblyman said traditional Chinese medicine has been recognised by many people in this country, especially in terms of physical treatment, acupuncture, herbs and others.

“Chinese medicine has been developing in this country for many years and many people have acquired knowledge and learned about Chinese medicine from China.

“This can be one of the medical tourism projects for our country, so that foreign tourists who want to receive traditional Chinese medicine treatment can list Malaysia as one of their destinations.

“Indirectly, this can increase the competitiveness of the country’s tourism sector,” he pointed out.

To further develop the field of Chinese medicine, Tiong also encouraged students to go further in the related field.
