KUCHING: Various activities are planned for Sarawak Museum’s 130th anniversary, including a conference that was held on Aug 2 and 3.

Nine local and international panellists took part in the online conference that attracted over 300 people.

Topics ranged from heritage, culture to museum related matters, said Sarawak Museum Department director Tazudin Mohtar.

“Besides that, the Old Building Special Tour will showcase an exhibition regarding the history and architecture of Sarawak Museum, nature collection and the Mural Tree of Life. The exhibition will be on for four months and it will be led by Yasmin Khalid Nicholls and colleagues.

“The Sarawak Museum in 130th Special Objects will showcase 130 selected collections from the Sarawak Museum Department virtually. This will be ongoing for one year.

“In addition, there will be an Online Smartphone Photo and Essay Writing Contest open to the public virtually. This will be led by Aldrin John and colleagues,” he said on Wednesday (Aug 4).

On the iconic Sarawak Museum, Tazudin pointed out that the museum is famously known as the Museum of Borneo’s Natural History and Ethnology.

He said the museum had undergone various expansion and renovation works to accommodate more exhibits.

“The government has approved and channelled a number of allocations for this.

“The museum has been expanded to its present state thanks to the increased collection and interest of the local community. “An interpretation plan has been prepared for the development of an exhibition that will showcase the history of the Sarawak Museum and the Nature collection.”
