KUCHING: Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah wants some of the sports events in the Commonwealth Games to be held in Sarawak — in the event Malaysia decides to host the Games, and not hold everything in West Malaysia.
The Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development said he would like to see some of the sports held in Sarawak if the country can afford to host the Games.
“It’s still being debated whether we are going to host the Commonwealth Games or not. Personally, the way I see it, if we can afford it, why not?
“If Malaysia were to organise it, I would want to see some of the sports held in Sarawak; definitely, because we are supposed to share all these events,” he told a press conference after officiating at the What About Kuching (WAK) 2024 Call for Proposal at The Borneo Hotel here, yesterday (March 18).
Abdul Karim said even the last two stages of 2024 Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdl) will take place in Sarawak.
“They (federal Ministry of Youth and Sports) had a meeting today (Mac 18) in Kuala Lumpur and it was stated that the last two stages will be in Sarawak.
“That should be the way, we should not be holding good events in West Malaysia only and leave the two states (Sarawak and Sabah) behind.
“Whether it’s going to be sports events or festivals, everything should be shared,” he said.
Federal Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh announced yesterday that Sarawak will host the last two stages of LTdl on Oct 5, from Miri to Bintulu (199.3km) and the final stage on Oct 6 in Bintulu (166.8km). On the Commonwealth Games, Yeoh also said all angels will be considered before deciding to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games in a cabinet meeting thi
